Preserve Acres: 45.3 acres
Roundtrip Distance: 1.0 mile
Protected in 2024, The Ledges is a 45-acre public nature preserve in Brookfield. The 1.0-mile loop trail begins at the parking area on Banquo Brae Road and winds its way through rocky outcrops and forest. Follow the white blazed trail up a short, but steep, incline from the parking area.
The trail passes a vernal pool that is a habitat for many amphibian species during the breeding season. In the spring, you may hear the chorus of northern spring peepers and wood frogs. The trail crosses a seasonal stream before it splits. You can go either way on the trail as it is a loop, which gradually undulates around rocky outcrops and winds through forests of eastern hemlock and black and yellow birch.
Many wildlife species utilize the property, including black bears, bobcats, coyotes, and white-tailed deer. Numerous bird species have been documented, including the black-capped chickadee, great blue heron, wood thrush, and black-throated green warbler. Be sure to listen for the sounds of these mature woodland migratory birds before returning to the parking area.
