Trail Opening – Alice McCallister Memorial Sanctuary

Join us for a special trail opening and dedication at the Alice McCallister Memorial Sanctuary. This preserve has long been a favorite among bird watchers and NCLC has updated the trail system to create a new loop trail.
As early as the 1970s, NCLC’s founder and first president, Alice McCallister, identified Mud Pond as a protection priority. Despite its name, Mud Pond is a jewel set between a quartzite ridge on the west and the northern buttress of Long Mountain on the east. The wetland has calcareous (alkaline) wetland soils. These wetland soils are rare in Connecticut and this supports an amazing diversity of species.
